Some of you may remember my Golf story that !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , where my 2010 Golf Trendline caught fire sitting in my driveway for whatever reason. For the last month I've been driving a rental-spec Mazda 3 and am happy to report that I picked up a replacement 2010 Golf Sportline yesterday morning. It's nice to be back in a familiar environment. It has 20k fewer kilometers than my original car and is a higher spec, so I've gained things like a sunroof, tinted windows, heated seats and the sweet touchscreen.
VW has said that I will not be told what the results of their possible investigation are, so I'll never know exactly what happened to the engine. As I !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! they offered me $500 dealer options or a voucher for $1000 off my next VW so I took the voucher. Now I have to wait for the Mk7 GTI to arrive in Canada and hope I have enough money before the deal runs out.

All in all, it's a reasonable outcome. I have a newer car, with more features, for a marginal cost increase, although I would have liked to skip the whole thing altogether.

Welcome back to the VAG fold!
^ that sounds strangly inappropriate
I'm jelly of your upcoming MK7. I'll have to plug along in my MK6 GTI wishing I had that new interior!

I'm hoping they don't jack the price too much, but other than that I'm very excited about it.

THAT'S disturbing. The conspiracist in me says cover-up. Crazy — I know.

Car fires happen, and there's a reason the 2.5L engine is being phased out, but I was hoping to get something from them. Even after saying I am a mechanical engineer and want to know the technical stuff, no dice. I'm reasonably sure it was either a fluid leak or electrical problem, though, so I'll stick with that.

I'm conflicted about it. Most reviews have said it is fantastically refined and has great fit and finish but continues to lag behind many rivals dynamically. I have to decide what I really want from the car, but since it will still drive great, I'll probably go for it.

I'm not relying on the reviews yet because theres not a single NA-production model, only NA-spec made in Germany...
